Use Your Illusion Tour...

SMW: Forest Fortress Hazard Payoff

Super Mario World

Had long suspected there was more to see beyond the traditional "Boss Door" of the World 5 "Forest Fortress" in Super Mario World.

Attempted to go the distance by using the cape to fly over the seemingly endless pit of lava, but had no success.

Other players have had better luck "spin-jumping" off the Podoboo lava fireballs - Which sounds kinda insane, but it's actually the easier of the two strategies. Mario is more impervious to attacks this way, and the array of continuous fireballs inevitably keep Mario airborne.

Beyond The First Boss Door...

The second "Boss Door" leads to the exact same room - But taking the treacherously long route will award Mario with NINE (count them!) 1-Up Mushrooms.

Italian Cooking...

Mario gets roasted alive by red-hot lava.

Suddenly getting hungry for spicy pasta sauce...

Fortunately, reaching the alternate door isn't necessary towards the count of finding all 96 exits in the game.
Just a true accomplishment that any Mario Stuntman is bound to attempt.

On my own game file, gotta make it all the way back to the World 5 Fortress before I can try it again...

Straight to Video...

Just a quick clip of the actual trick itself (without watching the entire damn level):

All-Star Cast of Obscure Cameos...

SMB3: The King Has Been Transformed!

Touched on this royal subject before, but don't think the snapshots were ever posted altogether.

A topic that encompasses four Mario games...
The Super Mario All-Stars version of Super Mario Bros. 3, which of course features brief appearances by characters from Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario World.

Super Mario All-Stars!
(Super Mario Bros 3)

When "The King has been transformed!"
I don't see what the big rush is to change him back...
Some of these magical spells are kinda cool.

The transformations on the SNES version are different than the original NES version, but I personally find them to be more memorable.

Call 'em Easter Eggs, Cameos, or just fun little details.

Cobrat the snake is one of my favorites...

(Also reminds me that the Koopa Kids also had their ugly mugs updated for the All-Stars version)

The Full Monty:
World 1: Cobrat (SMB2)
World 2: Hoopster (SMB2)
World 3: Dino Rhino (SMW)
World 4: Donkey Kong Junior
World 5: Albatross (SMB2)
World 6: Monty Mole (SMW)
World 7: Yoshi (SMW)

World 2: Hoopster (SMB2)

The original version featured a random spider... Using the beetle Hoopster from SMB2 was a nice touch.

World 3: Dino Rhino (SMW)

Not quite sure why Dino Rhino is purple instead of green...
(That's what happens when stuff is outsourced to Korea)

Dino Rhino in Super Mario World

World 4: Donkey Kong Junior

Here's a really old throwback... DK Junior!
(Who technically grew up to be modern-day Donkey Kong...)

World 5: Albatross (SMB2)

Albatross. Only oldschool Mario veterans would have been aware of him.

World 6: Monty Mole (SMW)

Monty Mole looks like an even bigger prick with that crown on his head... We all hated this critter!

If you can make it all the way through the hellish World 7 (Piranha Plant-Infested Pipe Maze of Death), you'll be treated to one of the more familiar character cameos - Mario's dino pal Yoshi.
World 7: Yoshi (SMW)

Any chance we can borrow that green Yoshi for our trip to Bowser's Castle?
Didn't think so.

Duck and Cover...

Propaganda From The Trenches

Super Mario World
Bonzai Bill is just about to splatter poor Mario like spaghetti and meatballs.

Exactly where are the cannons that fire these giant Bullet Bills, anyway?

More SNES promo stuff... Super Mario World and a mini poster from Star Fox.

Good thing Mario's got extra lives to spare.

Fox McCloud looks anything but tame (possibly rabid).

It's a Magical World...

Did a playthrough of Super Mario World a while back...
Almost forgot that I captured several hundred images.

A few favorite moments:

Underwater Ghost-Fortress.
Truly a level from hell.

Not a fan of the new "standard" Boo Diddly face...
But I do like the many faces of the Boo Buddies.

Knockin' Lakitu off his cloud

Still get a kick out of names like "Cheese Bridge", "Butter Bridge" and "Soda Lake".
Reminds me that I gotta re-stock the fridge.

World 6 (aka Chocolate Isand) seems to have the largest abundance of dinosaurs.
With very little vegetation, you may find a Triceratops eating a Twix bar.
(or possibly roasting s'mores)

Gettin' a sneak peak at Bowser's castle via secret areas (via World 2 and World 6).
As far as I know, this was unprecedented in Mario games.

More ghosties in the sunken Doom Ship.

(For those fascinated with shipwrecks, see the first worlds of Donkey Kong Country 2)

Just love that mystical MagiKoopa (aka Kamek).
Making his debut here in Super Mario World, he'd become a major antagonist in SMW2.
He was also slated to appear in "Mario Kart R" which evolved into Mario Kart 64.

(Let's spontaneously start a rumor that Mario Kart R featured some explicit footage of Princess Peach deemed inappropriate for younger players)
